To give an idea our front garden is north facing and the far edge about 10 m from the house gets a fair amount of sun but closer to gets progressively less. Thay can get quite cold later on in the day. If its open all around you youll probably have plenty of light. As you can see there is plenty of stuff you can grow.

We have a north facing back garden and find that there is sun in different areas at different times of the day which in the recent heat wave has been a godsend as that also means that there is shade in different areas. In an average plot youll get morning sun hitting the left-hand side for a few hours but the right-hand side will be darker and cooler. We had a north-east facing garden in our last place and we just couldnt use it.
